Introductie / INTRODUCTION

Het Nationaal Herbarium Nederland (NHN), nu deel van het Nederlands Centrum voor Biodiversiteit Naturalis (NCB Naturalis), bezit een aantal oude herbaria. Een van deze is een laat 17de eeuws, gebonden boek met 50 (voor het merendeel steriele) specimens uit Suriname.
Hoewel niet alle gedroogde planten zijn voorzien van een beschrijving zijn het waarschijnlijk wel allemaal nuttige soorten. Bij de meeste planten staat echter een (pre-Linneaanse) naam, een Surinaamse naam en soms een vermelding van het uiterlijk van de plant en het gebruik in het Latijn.
De manier van inbinden en het handschrift in het herbarium wijzen op de bekende Duitse botanicus Paul Hermann (1646 - 1695), professor aan de Universiteit Leiden van 1671 tot 1695. Hermanns Surinaamse herbarium was bedoeld als kado voor de bekende politicus en botanicus Hieronymus van Beverningh. Hoewel Hermann zelf het herbarium in elkaar heeft gezet, kan hij de planten niet zelf verzameld hebben, want hij is nooit naar Suriname afgereisd. Het botanisch material is hoogstwaarschijnlijk verzameld door Hendrik Meyer.
Deze website is gebaseerd op het onderzoek van Sarina Veldman (2012) 'The forgotten Hermann Herbarium: a historical collection of useful plants from Suriname (ca. 1689)'. Dit MSc projekt werd uitgevoerd in het kader van het onderzoeksprogramma 'Plant Use of the Motherland-Linking West African and Afro-Caribbean Ethnobotany', onder supervisie van Tinde van Andel. The National Herbarium of the Netherlands (NHN), now part of the Netherlands Center for Biodiversity Naturalis, possesses various old herbaria. Amongst these is a late 17th century bound herbarium, containing 50 dried, predominantly sterile, species from Surinam. Although not all specimens are accompanied by a description of their local applications, all plants present in this herbarium appear to be useful plants. Some plants are accompanied by (pre-Linnaean) Latin or vernacular names and in some cases Latin descriptions of the use of the plants. Based on the binding and the handwriting, the herbarium was first thought to be composed by the well-known botanist Paul Hermann (1646 - 1695), professor at Leiden University at that time. Hermann's Suriname herbarium was presented as a gift to the famous politician and botanist Hieronymus van Beverningh. Although Hermann himself was said to have constructed this herbarium, he probably did not collect the plants in person, as there are no records of him ever visiting Suriname. The collections are probably made by Hendrik Meyer. This website is based on a study by Sarina Veldman et al.
